SARAWAK
Sarawak, the largest state in Malaysia, is situated on the island of Borneo
and jointly with Sabah forms the East Malaysia. Separated from peninsular
Malaysia by the South China Sea. Sarawak itself is divided into nine
divisions, Kuching, Sri Aman, Sibu, Miri, Limbang Sarikei, Kapit, Samarahan
and Bintulu.
There are several ethnic groups in
Sarawak with different languages, cultures and lifestyles. The Ibans form
major ethnic group. The people of Sarawak practice varieties of religions
that include, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism and other.
Sarawak is an enjoyable and interesting
tourism destination with Kuching, the Capital of Sarawak, is the ideal base
to start exploring. Going through the city will take you on a cultural
journey as Kuching has many beautifully landscaped parks and gardens,
historical buildings which the Old Court House Complex, the Clock Tower,
traditional Chinese shop houses, the Istana, Kuching Waterfront, various
Chinese Temples, Churches, the Civic Centre, The State mosque and the
Sarawak Museum. The Old Court house Complex is now used as the Sarawak
Tourism Complex that also houses the visitors Information Centre.
One of Sarawak’s historical building is the
residence of the Head of state today, the Istana, was a bridal gift by Rajah
Charles Brooke to his wife Ranee Margaret. It is situated at the Sarawak
River Bank.
Some of Sarawak’s own national parks are Bako,
Gunung Gading, Kubah, Mulu, Niah and several others. A tour to Bako National
Park, home of the proboscis monkey, takes about 45 minutes drive from the
city and 25 minutes by boat. You will have a chance to see some wildlife
like the long-tailed macaque and silver leaf monkeys, wild boar, squirrels
and monitor lizards, if you are lucky, it is a tropical rain forest with
various types of flora and fauna.
The Park is situated 120km away and takes
about 2 hours drive from Kuching, consisting of a rugged complex of
mountains made up of several peaks, the highest at 906 meters. The mountain
is a dominant landmark and the whole region is of outstanding beauty.
Discover the abundance of Botanical Treasures where numerous species plant,
birds and animals live in this rainforest. Look out for RAFFLESIA- The
world’s largest flower, which measures about a diameter of one metre when it
blooms. However there is no specific flowering season and each flower blooms
last only a few days. Then climb to the waterfall.
With six jungle trails and a path leads to the
summit of Gunung Serapi, Kubah National Park is accessible on a day trip
journey. It has crystal clear streams, small waterfall and bathing pools
where you are able to enjoy the cool water when bathing there. Some species
of amphibians and reptiles can be found in the forest as well as wild
orchids.
Taking a 55-minutes flight from Kuching to
Miri and proceed on a connecting 30-minutes flight to reach the famous Mulu
National Park. A tour to the four show caves which include the Deer Cave,
Langs Cave, Wind Cave and Clearwater Cave is the highlight of the Mulu
National Park tour where you can experience to see bats coming out from
Langs cave in the evening. You may experience the cool, crystal clear water
from the stream at Clearwater Cave. With a length of 600 meters, width of
450 meters and height of 100 meters, the Sarawak Chamber in Mulu is regarded
as the world’s largest cave chamber.
Niah National Park was formed in 1974 and is
regarded as one of the largest limestone caves in the world with the
paintings in the wall and boat-shaped coffins found there indicated that the
cave is about 45,000 years old. It is situated at the south of the Oil Town,
Miri.
An award-winning living museum, the Sarawak
Cultural village offers the introduction to the local cultures and
lifestyles of the ethnic groups in Sarawak. You will experience visiting the
Iban, Bidayuh and Orang Ulu longhouses, the Penan jungle settlement, the
Melanau tall-house, the Malay house where all these houses are staffed with
members of each ethnic groups with their traditional costumes and daily
activities.
Situated about 32 km away from Kuching is the
popular tourists’ attraction, the Semenggoh Wildlife Rehabilitation centre.
This is where the Orang Utans are trained on independent survival in the
wild. The era set free in this forest reserved but frequently come back for
their meals. During fritting season, some might not come back for meals.
This indicates a good sign that they are able to survive independently.
Why not take a trip for a longhouse tour when
you in SARAWAK? Take a trip by land for about a three hours journey then the
boat to reach the longhouses. You will never expect to be warmly welcomed by
the longhouse folks. The highlight of the tours is the traditional welcome
dances. “Ngajat” in full ceremonial regalia and rice wine drinking session
